COGENT Farming Business Systems Ltd is a small R&D company trading as eCOGENT, that was set up to identify greater business profit opportunities from farming.

The research has revealed that by utilising international best business practices the Process developed is able to identify profit windows on a daily basis that allows significant enhanced profits to be achieved on a regular basis on a full range of farms from Southland to Northland.

Three main areas of improvement have been identified and achieved - Better Production, More Profit and a Sustainable Environment.

Better production from higher quality pastures as measured by Brix levels, better higher quality soils as measured by visual assessments and carbon levels. The right pastoral residuals, stocking rate, calving / lambing weaning / drying off date

As well as healthier animals as measured by lower incidence of : – staggers, milk fevemastitis, empty rates, etc.

More profit from quality more nutrient dense pastures, correct fertiliser levels and type and more accurate sizing of herds and therefore healthier, fully fed animals.

By adopting a responsible sustainable environment approach the following trends have been achieved such as less pugging and therefore soil damage, more permanent multi-species pastures, reduced use of soluble fertilisers and reduced supplementary feeding all determined and achieved by measuring daily profit.

This profit driven process utilises the 6 Laws of Best Farming Business Practice as developed by eCOGENT and therefore ensuring the robust measurement and management of the daily profit per KG DM consumed as well as the capacity to capture and store pastoral carbon. Carbon sales are pending.

And so daily questions as to how much, when and what feed are all derived from this on line farmer built and proved, Massey validated, strategic business decision making process. Over the past decade members have regularly achieved profit gains of 10 – 40% per year.
